How to Measure for a Cosplay Costume Before You Order

Record the right measurements, understand body versus garment charts, and check each part of your costume before choosing a size.

A costume size label is only the start of a fit decision. Before choosing a size, collect your measurements, identify what the product chart measures, and check the exact costume option you want. This is especially useful for outfits with several fitted pieces.

1. Record your measurements before choosing a size

Use a flexible measuring tape over the undergarments you plan to wear. Keep it comfortably against your body without pulling it tight. Record the unit beside every number.

  • Chest or bust: measure around the fullest part, with the tape level across your back.
  • Natural waist: measure around your natural waistline, rather than the waistband of a low-rise pair of trousers.
  • Hips: measure around the fullest part.
  • Height: measure from the floor to the top of your head without shoes.

These measurement principles follow Simplicity’s measurement guide. Its sewing-pattern size numbers are not HEROCOS costume sizes; use the chart on the costume you are considering.

2. Check whether the chart describes your body or the garment

A body chart describes the wearer. A finished-garment chart describes the clothing. The space between the two affects how the clothing fits; they should not be treated as interchangeable. Simplicity explains this distinction when discussing fit and ease.

Read the note immediately beside the product’s table. If it is labelled as garment measurements, ask about the intended fit before matching it directly to your body. If two charts appear on a page, identify the one specific to that design. An unclear chart is a reason to ask for clarification, not to assume a familiar letter size will work.

Do not use parcel dimensions as a size chart. Measurements describing a shipping package cannot tell you whether a costume fits your shoulders, chest or waist.

3. Check each part of a multi-piece costume

On the 14th Doctor costume page, the current style choices include Only Coat, Waistcoat+Trousers and Full Set. Decide which option you need before discussing fit. A question about an overcoat is different from a question about trousers or a fitted waistcoat.

For a coat, ask about the relevant shoulder, chest and sleeve measurements and explain what you intend to wear underneath. For a set, check the top and bottom separately. If your measurements fall across different size rows, send all the relevant numbers instead of choosing solely from height or your usual T-shirt size.

There is no single allowance that suits every costume. Avoid adding an arbitrary amount to all your body measurements. Ask what the listed measurements mean for the specific design and intended layers.

4. Use custom sizing only where it is offered

The 14th Doctor listing currently includes a custom size choice. If you select a custom option, complete the measurement fields shown on that product page and check the unit selector. Standard sizes and custom measurements are separate choices; entering numbers does not mean every costume in the store can be made to measure.

For measurements such as shoulder width or arm length, follow the directions supplied for that field. If the start and end points are unclear, ask before submitting. Do not substitute a measurement taken in a different way.

A useful message to send before ordering

I am considering (product link), (style) and (size). My measurements are (chest/bust), (waist), (hips) and (height), all in (cm/inches). I plan to wear (layers) underneath. Please confirm whether this chart shows body or garment measurements and which option I should consider.

Contact HEROCOS with your measurements, or browse the Doctor Who costume collection when you are ready to compare designs. Keep the product link with your measurements so the fit question stays tied to the correct outfit.
